Denmark-based dairy cooperative Arla Foods has built a 1.7-MW solar plant in Bahrain which will partly cover the electricity needs of its manufacturing site in the capital of Manama.

The electricity produced by the solar cells installed on an area of 8,000 sq m (9,568 sq yd) will be enough to meet about 20% of the factory's annual energy consumption. The commissioning of the plant will cut the manufacturing site's carbon footprint by 1,600 tonnes per year.

The food company said last week it had invested USD 1.3 million (EUR 1.18m) in the project.

Arla Foods acquired the production site in 2019 from Mondelez International (NASDAQ:MDLZ). Since then, a total of USD 63 million has been invested to raise the production capacity of the factory. Now, it produces about 80,000 tonnes of cheese and cream products with the bulk of the products sold in the Middle East and North Africa.
