Armenia launches USD-58m renewables programme - report

Armenia has initiated a USD-58-million (EUR 52.5m) renewable energy programme that will involve the installation of over 70 MW of solar photovoltaic (PV) projects by 2020, local news agency Arka reports.

The plan will be funded by the country’s energy ministry with the backing of the Climate Investment Funds, the World Bank and the Asian Development Bank (ADB).

Armenia is currently working on a 30-MW pilot solar power facility that is expected to be switched on by 2017. The demonstration project will be followed by the installation of 40 MW more by the end of the decade.

In addition to solar power, Armenia also intends to develop geothermal energy projects. The resource potential will be determined after drilling. The country currently relies on nuclear and hydropower.
