Armenia aims to have 70 MW of solar photovoltaic (PV) capacity by 2025, the deputy minister for energy, Areg Galstyan, said in parliament on Wednesday.

He explained, as cited by ARKA news agency, that solar energy is still too expensive for Armenia but efforts are being made to increase the use of that renewable energy source. A pilot 30-MW solar park is planned for completion by end-2015.

Currently, Armenia and the Asian Development Bank are partnering to identify the best locations for solar power plants in the country so as to meet the 2025 goal.

For now, the most popular renewable energy source in Armenia is small hydroelectricity, ARKA said. The country also has plans for some geothermal power capacity and there are some wind turbines installed.
