Armenia to launch USD-26m solar programme in 2015 - report

Aug 7, 2014 - The Armenian government intends to launch a USD-26-million (EUR 19.4m) solar energy development programme in 2015, local news agency ARKA said on Tuesday, quoting an official.

The investment programme will have a term of five to six years, according to Tamara Babayan, director of the Armenia Renewable Resources and Energy Efficiency Fund. The main goal is Armenia to reduce its dependence on energy imports and fossil fuels. The state believes that this scheme could increase the share of generated solar power in Armenia to up to 8% of the total, Babayan said as cited by the agency.

Last month, an official at Armenia’s Public Services Regulatory Commission told Armenpress that the body could offer a special tariff for photovoltaic (PV) projects that is based on the results of a 30-MW pilot solar park, currently under development. The ideal tariff would be in the range of AMD 50.00 (USD 0.122/EUR 0.091) to AMD 70.00 per kWh, the commission’s head of tariff policy, Garegin Baghramyan, said.
