As many as 20 firms and consortia have submitted pre-qualification bids in a solar tender for a capacity of 55 MW in Armenia, local news agency Panorama said on Wednesday.

The country is planning to build its first photovoltaic (PV) park near the village of Masrik in the province of Gegharkunik. The action attracted interest from companies in China, the US, Germany, Spain, South Korea, Iran and other countries, Hayk Harutyunyan, Deputy Minister of the Ministry of Energy Infrastructures and Natural Resources told Panorama.

Following the pre-qualification phase, selected applicants will take part in a tariff competition, expected to be completed at the start of next year. Construction of the solar park is seen to be completed at end-2018, according to the report.

The 55-MW solar project is part of a government investment strategy for the addition of up to 110 MW of PV capacity at six locations across Armenia.
