Atalaya Mining Plc (LON:ATYM) has initiated the permitting process to set up a 50-MW solar power system at its Riotinto copper mine in Spain.

The miner said that it will use the entire capacity for on-site consumption.

The open-pit copper mine is located in the Spanish southern region of Andalusia, in an area rich in solar resource.

Technical studies carried out by a third party have shown that the solar project is economically viable and could potentially contribute to lowering Riotinto’s operating costs, Atalaya said.

The company will spend the permitting period evaluating various financing options put forward by industry players in Spain.

Construction would start by mid-2021, subject to finalising the permitting process and securing financing, Atalaya said.
