Atlantic Copper, part of US natural resources group Freeport-McMoRan Inc (NYSE:FCX), will be sourcing green power from a 23-MWp solar park in eastern Spain, it was announced on Thursday.

The electricity will be delivered under two separate power purchase agreements (PPAs), both with 10-year terms.

Switzerland-based integrated energy company MET Group said that its Spanish arm has sealed a deal with domestic solar development and EPC services provider Prosolia Energy to off-take the electricity from its Sant Jordi photovoltaic (PV) plant in the province of Castellon. At the same time, the MET Group unit has clinched a PPA with Atlantic Copper that will enable it to deliver the Sant Jordi plant’s output to the copper producer. The supplies will be made through independent trader Fortia Energia.

Under the arrangement, Atlantic Copper will receive electricity from the PV park and the Guarantees of Origin (GOs) related to the generation.

“This new clean energy supply agreement, the fifth in a portfolio that we began six years ago and which now accounts for 38% of our electricity purchases, is part of our decarbonisation strategy and our commitment to the use of renewable energies to guarantee a secure, competitive and clean supply,” said Esther Alonso, general manager of Energy Transition and Sustainability at Atlantic Copper.
