Portugal-based CJR Renewables has been entrusted with the installation of a 200-MW/800-MWh battery energy storage system (BESS) in Chile, next to an existing solar farm in the country’s Antofagasta region.

The contract was awarded by Latin America-focused renewables operator Atlas Renewable Energy, CJR said on LinkedIn. The Portuguese firm will act as the primary contractor for the civil and electrical works, taking care of the installation of all foundations and 320 Sungrow battery units.

The proposed BESS will be located adjacent to the 244-MWp Sol del Desierto solar farm which Atlas brought online in the Maria Elena commune of Tocopilla Province in March 2022. However, the facility will be set up as a standalone solution, interacting only with the grid, Atlas said previously.

The Sol del Desierto BESS has in place a 15-year power purchase agreement (PPA) with Chilean energy trader Emoac and will re-inject around 280 GWh per year to the grid to reduce curtailments.
