Grenergy expands BYD battery order to 3 GWh for Chilean project
Sep 13, 2024 11:43 CESTChina’s Sungrow Power Supply Co Ltd (SHE:300274) has secured a contract to supply its liquid cooling storage system, PowerTitan, for a 200-MW battery energy storage system (BESS) project set in Chile’s Atacama Desert.
The power conversion specialist said it had recently signed the agreement with Latin America-focused renewables firm Atlas Renewable Energy for the exclusive use of the PowerTitan solution in the BESS del Desierto project.
BESS del Desierto will have a storage capacity of 800 MWh, or according to Sungrow -- 880 GWh. As previously announced, the battery array will be located next to Atlas’ 244-MWp Sol del Desierto solar farm, but will operate as a standalone solution.
Due to its location in the harsh desert environment, the BESS will be exposed to heavy dust and extreme temperature fluctuations. Sungrow says that the PowerTitan offers C5 corrosion resistance, IP65 protection against wind and sand, intelligent liquid cooling, and a smart operation and maintenance system.
Additionally, Sungrow’s advanced grid-forming technology provides millisecond-level power response and regulates voltage and frequency, mitigating grid instability caused by long-distance transmission from Atacama, where solar power is abundant, to high consumption areas located 1,500 kilometres away, the company said.
Portuguese contractor CJR Renewables landed the contract to provide battery installation and other services on this project.
