Australian Kentor Gold gets geothermal power licence in Solomon Islands

Mar 13, 2012 - Australian gold miner Kentor Gold Ltd (ASX:KGL) on Monday said its wholly-owned unit Kentor Energy Pty Ltd had received a 3-year prospecting licence for geothermal power by the government of Solomon Islands.

Kentor said it had already signed surface access agreements with landowners in the island of Savo and would provide studies to identify geothermal resource this year. Potential feasibility studies for developing a geothermal power plant are seen to be conducted in 2013 to 2014, with production drilling and construction of a power plant with initial capacity of 20 MW expected in 2015 or in 2016.

The company plans to supply electricity to the city of Honiara, which consumes costly diesel-generated electricity at present.
