Australian Plantic opens expanded bioplastic facility

May 17, 2012 - Australian bioplastic packaging maker Plantic Technologies Ltd has wrapped up an expansion of its manufacturing facility in the Melbourne suburb of Altona that will boost the company's production by 400%.

The move was announced by Australia's industry and innovation minister, Greg Combet, who opened the expanded plant on Thursday. Plantic manufactures bio-degradable packaging from corn and supplies its products to some of the largest Australian as well as international retailers.

Combet noted that the production of bioplastic required 50% less energy compared to normal plastic manufacturing and called on other companies to tap the government's Clean Energy Future package and emulate Plantic's example.
The Clean Technology Programmes, worth AUD 1.2 billion (USD 1.2bn/EUR 938m), offer support for investment in energy efficient equipment and innovative low pollution technologies and products.
