The Australian government on Wednesday announced support for six large-scale batteries in Victoria and South Australia after a pilot tender for dispatchable capacity across the two states.

The six projects, representing 995 MW/3,626 MWh of capacity, are being underwritten by the Capacity Investment Scheme. The batteries will run for up to four hours and will be in service from 2027.

The successful CIS projects for the South Australian-Victorian tender tender are listed below:

Project Company Capacity Location
Wooreen BESS EnergyAustralia 350 MW/1,400 MWh Victoria
Solar River ESS ZEN Energy 170 MW/653 MWh South Australia
Limestone Coast West BESS Pacific Green Technologies 250 MW/1,000 MWh South Australia
Springvale Energy Hub Progress Power 115 MW/230 MWh Victoria
Clements Gap BESS Pacific Blue 60 MW/143 MWh South Australia
Hallett BESS EnergyAustralia 50 MW/200 MWh South Australia

The government said that there were also many qualitative unsuccessful bids, which are being encouraged to rebid in the next tender for the National Electricity Market, planned for the end of the year. In May, Australia opened the national tender aimed at adding 6 GW of renewable generation and batteries to the east-coast grid.

EnergyAustralia secured two projects -- Wooreen, which will be located in the Latrobe Valley, Victoria, and Hallett in Canowie, South Australia.

“Both batteries are to be located near power stations, Jeeralang (Victoria) and Hallett (South Australia), using land we own and existing transmission infrastructure to efficiently supply additional capacity to the market,” EnergyAustralia’s managing director Mark Collette said, adding that the projects are part of the company’s investment in additional capacity ahead of the closure of its Yallourn coal-fired power station in 2028.

The Solar River battery storage system is part of a hybrid project located north of Adelaide between Burra and Morgan, and the Clements Gap battery is located at the Clements Gap wind farm.
