Austria’s solar sector had a strong performance in 2023, tripling its annual expansion to 2.6 GWp, industry association PV Austria said.

Citing recent annual government statistics, the organisation said last week that more than 130,000 new photovoltaic (PV) systems were installed in Austria last year. This brings the country’s total PV installations to close to 390,000, having a combined capacity of 6.4 GWp.

PV Austria, however, said that the forecasts for the current year are more cautious and called for more government efforts, including shortened approval procedures and rapid grid expansion to ensure PV’s success continues in 2024.

Austria needs 21 GWp of PV capacity by 2030 to achieve 100% renewable electricity supply and more than 41 GWp by 2040 to reach climate neutrality.

According to the announcement, PV electricity now accounts for 12% of electricity demand in the country.
