AW-Energy relocates to new facility with wave power R&D, test capabilities

Finnish wave energy technology developer AW-Energy Oy is moving to a new facility with a dedicated 3-MW in-house test site where the firm will be able to work on megawatt class power take off (PTO) systems.

The larger premises in Vantaa, Finland, include a 1,200-sq-m capacity innovation centre and the full-scale test site. It provides easier access for customers and supports the commercialisation and delivery of AW-Energy’s WaveRoller projects that are scheduled for next year, the firm said.

"We are preparing for the upcoming surge in wave energy. Our relocation to this larger facility is an investment for the future and Finland's future as a key contributor in the development of sustainable wave energy technology,” commented CEO Christopher Ridgewell.

The commercial site where AW-Energy is now based is owned by real estate firm Conficap Oy.

“The thermal energy of AW-Energy’s wave generator will be used to heat our site and buildings, so together we can harness the waste heat as well. This will enable us to get closer to our zero carbon energy objective,” said Petteri Puumalainen, Real Estate Manager of Conficap.
