Amazon Web Services (AWS) has arranged a 105-MW wind power offtake deal in Ireland as part of a wider commitment to invest in up to 800 MW of new renewable energy projects in the country.

The unit of e-commerce giant Amazon.com Inc (NASDAQ:AMZN) has sealed a power purchase agreement (PPA) with Irish semi-state company Bord na Mona. The contract was unveiled by the energy group and concerns its 21-turbine Derrinlough wind farm in County Offaly, in the Irish Midlands.

Additionally, AWS has agreed to join Bord na Mona’s Eco Energy Park in the Midlands, which will house premises of large companies and will provide them with low-carbon electricity for their operations. The site will host more than 200 MW of low to zero-carbon power generation such as wind, solar, gas and potentially battery and hydrogen.

AWS is the first business to join the Eco Energy Park securing a pathway to develop data centres in the Midlands powered by wind and solar electricity. The initiative will back Amazon’s goal to match the entire electricity used for its operations with 100% renewable energy by 2025.
