Swiss renewable energy producer and trader Axpo Holding AG, together with power distributor EWS AG, intends to build a 9-MWp ground-mounted solar power system as the first alpine plant in the canton of Schwyz.

The project called Alpin Solar Ybrig envisages the installation of photovoltaic (PV) modules on nine hectares of existing pastureland in the Roggenegg area, retaining the site’s suitability for alpine farming after the construction of the solar plant.

The municipality of Oberiberg and landowner Genossame Schwyz are expected to vote on the plan in the coming months so that construction work could begin in the autumn of 2024. Once fully commissioned post-2025, the solar park will be able to generate about 12 GWh per year.

The latest project aligns with Axpo’s so-called solar offensive which also resulted in the development of two other schemes – one near the Nalps reservoir in the canton of Grisons and the Ovra Solara Magriel installation in the Disentis ski resort.

“By having plants like these in the mountains, as well as ambitious projects in the Swiss Plateau, we want to build more than 1.2 GW of solar capacity in Switzerland and invest further in the development of renewable energies in the country,” said Oliver Hugi, Head of Solar Switzerland at Axpo.
