Swiss renewable energy producer and trader Axpo Holding AG and utility Rhiienergie AG have officially opened their home country’s largest green hydrogen production plant, a 2.5-MW facility in Graubunden Canton.

The site will be able to produce around 350 tonnes of green hydrogen annually, Axpo said on Friday.

The new facility is located next to Axpo’s majority-owned Reichenau run-of-river hydropower plant in the municipality of Domat/Ems, from where it will receive electricity for the electrolysis process. The hydrogen output will be compressed on-site and delivered to refuelling stations and industrial customers.

"The hydrogen plant fits perfectly with efforts to exploit the potential of green hydrogen in the Alpine region and the canton's endeavours to achieve its climate and energy goals,” said Carmelia Maissen, Head of the Canton’s Department of Infrastructure, Energy and Mobility.

Construction works for the project were initiated in January last year. Axpo and Rhiienergie previously said the investment in the jointly-owned project is estimated at CHF 8 million (USD 8.8m/EUR 8.2m).
