Swiss renewable energy producer and trader Axpo Holding AG will press on with the construction of a biomethane plant in Italy, which is expected to produce about 45 GWh of renewable energy annually.

The facility, which will be located in the municipality of Grottole in southern Italy, marks Axpo's entry into the country's biomethane market. The plant is expected to become operational by the end of 2025. It will use agricultural waste from neighbouring farms to produce carbon-neutral green gas that will be fed into Italy’s national gas network.

A consortium of Italian companies led by Atzwanger SpA and BiHcon have already been selected as engineering, procurement and building contractors for the project. The group is expected to start the construction works later in September.

Axpo completed a transaction for the project with a local developer earlier in the month. The parties agreed not to disclose details of the sale price.

The renewable energy producer and trader already has 15 biogas plants in Switzerland. The company further operates a biomethane plant in Spain that produces 26 GWh of energy annually and will be expanded to 115 GWh in the future.

In April, Axpo also revealed plans to build a biomethane production plant in Portugal, entering the local market.
