Azerbaijan sees 2.5 GW of renewable power capacity by 2020 - report

Aug 3, 2012 - Total installed renewable energy capacity in Azerbaijan may reach 2,500 MW by 2020, Azeri Trend News Agency reported earlier this week, citing information from the State Company for Alternative Energy.

According to the newly established state company, the country's renewable energy capacity could reach 830 MW by 2015 through the development of solar, wind, hydro, biomass, geothermal, and waste-to-power plants.

The company had told the news agency that it was possible to increase the total installed solar power capacity in Azerbaijan to 290 MW by 2015 and to 600 MW by 2020, while wind power capacity could be expanded to 240 MW by 2015 and 800 MW by 2020. Hydropower capacity of up to 80 MW can be added by 2015 and 150 MW by 2020.

Azerbaijan targets a 20% share of renewables in its power production by 2020. For comparison, that percentage was 10% in 2011, including 9.8% for hydropower and 0.2% for other renewable sources for power generation. The country also aims to increase the share of renewable power in its total power consumption to 9.7% in 2020 from 2.3% in 2011.

The State Agency on Alternative and Renewable Sources has listed on its website a 110-MW EUR-165-million (USD 201.1m) wind project, a 25-MW EUR-87.5-million solar power project, a 50-MW EUR-75-million sewage gas station, and a 100-MW EUR-250-million offshore wind project among its energy projects for 2012-2013.
