Bahrain inks deal for 72-MW solar power project

Bahrain has signed a deal to develop a 72-MW solar power project, the largest in the country, as part of its efforts to bolster its climate aspirations.

The project spans several sites in Sakhir, a desert area located in the Southern Governorate of the Gulf nation, state-owned Bahrain News Agency (BNA) has announced.

The initiative includes rooftop and ground-mounted solar systems, as well as car park installations and electric vehicle charging stations situated at Bahrain International Circuit, the University of Bahrain, Exhibition World Bahrain, and Al Dana Amphitheatre.

A contract for the project was signed at a ceremony last week.

Yasser bin Ibrahim Humaidain, Minister of Electricity and Water Affairs, said that the planned solar power plant will support the kingdom’s goals of reducing carbon emissions and reaching net zero by 2060.

It will also help the country reach 250 MW of renewable energy capacity by 2025.
