Bahrain to award 5-MW solar/wind project by year-end - report

Oct 7, 2014 - Bahrain is expected to award a contract for the construction of a 5-MW hybrid solar-and-wind plant in the southern part of the country by the end of the year, the Gulf Daily News (GDN) said today.

The publication quoted Abdulhussain Mirza, Minister of State for Electricity and Water Affairs, as saying that the project will comprise a 3-MW solar photovoltaic (PV) system plus 2 MW of wind capacity. The pilot plant will be located near the 1.2-GW Al Dur power and water plant.

According to the report, the solar/wind plant will be hooked to the grid in the first quarter of next year.

The hybrid facility will be built as part of the Electricity and Water Authority’s (EWA) strategy to install renewable energy projects in Bahrain. It is being developed using detailed technical studies conducted by German consultancy Fichtner.

The minister also noted, as cited by the paper, that the National Oil and Gas Authority (NOGA) and the Bahrain Petroleum Co (Bapco) have been developing their own solar PV project, which is now nearly 100% complete.
