Bahrain is preparing to build a solar park with at least 100-MW capacity in the country's Southern Governorate.

Last week, the kingdom's Electricity and Water Authority (EWA) opened a tender to appoint a qualified contractor to remediate a 2-sq km landfill site to prepare the plot for the construction of the solar farm.

The winner in the auction will be tasked with the design and construction of a landfill gas extraction and treatment system as well as with land remediation and the development of gas and leachate management systems.

In a separate auction, EWA will issue a request for proposals (RfP) for developing the solar plant which will be located on the remediated landfill site in Askar.

"Converting this landfill site to a solar farm capable of producing 100 MW is one of many steps the country hopes to execute to realise the objective of bringing carbon emissions in Bahrain to net zero by 2060", said EWA's president Kamal bin Ahmed Mohammed.

In August, Bahrain launched a tender, seeking to award at least 72 MW of solar that should be installed across multiple premises in Sakhir.
