UK independent energy developer Balance Power said today that it has obtained planning approval for a 49.5-MW/99-MWh battery energy storage system (BESS) project in southwest Leicestershire in England.

The facility, located in Hinckley, will consist of 28 battery units and will be capable of powering power about 13,000 homes once commissioned, which is expected by October 2025.

The construction start date has not been set yet.

The Hinckley BESS has a planned 40-year lifespan. After its expiration, it will be dismantled and the site will be restored to its original state.

The planning approval was granted by Rugby Borough Council’s case officer after thorough community consultations were held by Balance Power and resulted in no public objections, a press statement says.

Balance Power has brought nearly 40 energy projects to planning consent, adding 501.5 MW of capacity to the grid. The company has nearly 2 GW of projects in development.

In July, the company secured a GBP-5.1-million (USD 6.69m/EUR 6.06m) debt facility to fund the development of its pipeline of BESS and solar power projects at home along with the acquisition of a shovel-ready solar scheme in South West England.
