Ballast Nedam to install wind farm foundations on Rotterdam sea defences

Dutch construction company Ballast Nedam on Thursday said it has been contracted by Dutch utility Eneco to install the turbine foundations for the 116.7-MW Maasvlakte 2 wind project in the Netherlands.

The wind farm will be built on soft and hard sea defences in the Rotterdam port area and consist of 22 Vestas turbines.

Ballast Nedam’s assignment also includes cabling installation and a connection to the transformer. The company said that monopile foundations, typical for offshore turbines, will be used on the soft seawall.

According to the announcement, design work is underway and construction is due to begin in early 2022, with commissioning of the wind farm expected at the end of 2022.

Eneco won the tender for the construction of the wind project in early 2020. The tender was held by the Dutch Directorate-General for Public Works and Water Management, also known as Rijkswaterstaat, amid its plan to purchase the output of the wind park.
