The Bangladesh Power Development Board (BPDB) has launched a competitive bidding process for the deployment of 200 MW of solar photovoltaic (PV) capacity at four locations across the country.

The targeted grid-connected capacity will be split in four 50-MW projects near the Baraiyarhat, Chuadanga, Netrokona and Bhaluka grid substations, respectively. Projects will be developed under the build-own-operate (BOO) model.

The deadline for submitting proposals is August 28. Selected candidates will be awarded 20-year power purchase agreements (PPAs) with BPDB.

The government of Bangladesh has set a target for the country to produce 10% from its power from renewable energy sources and lift its installed renewables capacity to 3,168 MW by 2021. At present, the nation is highly dependent on natural gas for power generation.

Just recently, the Asian Development Bank (ADB) said it will provide USD 45.44 million (EUR 39m) to Bangladesh for the development of off-grid solar photovoltaic (PV) water irrigation systems. The country will also get some USD 55 million in debt from the World Bank to enhance renewable energy use in rural areas.
