Bayer inks PPA to source 100% renewables for German operations

German pharma giant Bayer AG (ETR:BAYN) has secured over 120 GWh of renewable power per year from the Wuppertal city utility to make its operations greener in the native country.

Bayer said on Friday it had signed a power purchase agreement (PPA) with public utility company Wuppertaler Stadtwerke (WSW) to procure wind and/or solar power from German wind and solar farms.

The agreed annual volume can meet power consumption needs of around 30,000 households. The PPA will ensure that Bayer sites in Darmstadt, Weimar, Bitterfeld, Bergkamen, Berlin and Wuppertal obtain 100% of their purchased electricity from renewable sources, Friday’s statement said.

“Last year, we signed a comprehensive agreement in the USA that will enable us to purchase 60 percent of the electricity we buy in the USA from renewable energy sources in the future. I am delighted that we have found a good partner in Germany with Wuppertaler Stadtwerke,” said Matthias Berninger, Head of Public Affairs, Science, Sustainability & HSE at Bayer.

Bayer has pledged to become climate-neutral by 2030. Its climate targets include purchasing only renewable energy by the end of the decade.
