BayWa r.e. after larger wind farm portfolio in APAC in 2023

German renewables company Baywa r.e. AG on Wednesday said that it plans to grow its wind farm portfolio in the Asia Pacific (APAC) region in 2023, where it is already developing gigawatts of projects.

The company is a greenfield developer with offices in Thailand, Vietnam, Philippines, Japan, Korea, Malaysia and Australia, but it will not rule out co-development partnerships and project purchases to carry out its expansion strategy.

“Our team welcomes any project opportunities and are open to market information from various industry sources to provide our superior services,” said Brian Barry, Head of Wind Asia, BayWa r.e.

At present, Baywa r.e. has around 4 GW of wind projects in various stages of development in Australia, “several hundred” megawatts ongoing in South Korea, over 300 MW in Vietnam and early-stage projects in the Philippines.

Baywa r.e. said that it expects to start construction of its first project in Thailand in 2024. Right now, it is awaiting results for very small power producer (VSPP) projects that qualified for the current Thai feed-in-tariff tender.

Once the planned wind farms become operational, the APAC assets could potentially generate more than 15 TWh of electricity per year, which could be enough to power over 2 million households in the region, according to Baywa r.e.
