German renewables company BayWa r.e. AG has connected the 54-MWp Alhendin solar farm in southern Spain, finalising an agri-voltaic project it developed for Danish roof windows manufacturer Velux.

Located at a site near Granada, the plant consists of over 85,000 solar panels, arranged in way that farming machinery can move between the arrays. BayWa r.e. has also partnered with the universities of Cordoba and Madrid to develop measures focused on enhancing biodiversity and improving habitats for the plant and animal life.

The Alhendin solar farm is now fully operational, ready to generate an estimated 96.8 GWh of electricity per year.

Alhendin is one of two solar projects that BayWa r.e. agreed to develop for Velux, which is pursuing a 100% renewable energy target for its European operations. The other solar project is located in Gerena, near Seville, and currently awaiting regulatory approval. The Gerena solar farm, with an installed capacity of around 60 MWp, is scheduled to be completed in 2025, BayWa r.e. said.

Both Alhendin and Gerena will operate under power purchase agreements (PPAs) between BayWa r.e. and Velux. The PPAs cover around 80% of the solar farms’ production.
