Bboxx, a platform in Africa for essential products and services, including clean energy, announced on Monday a partnership with consumer goods group Unilever (LON:ULVR) aimed at providing clean energy access to 1 million people in Kenya over the next three years.

Bboxx is joining forces with the Sunlight detergent brand to conduct combined marketing campaigns and mobilise agents with resources and training to promote clean energy solutions. The partnership will make use of Bboxx’s existing services and presence in Kenya and Sunlight’s heritage and distribution capacity. A cross-promotional agreement will also reward customers with free Sunlight products for payments towards their solar home systems.

“Not only is this a step towards the UN’s SDG 7 [sustainable development goal 7], clean energy for all, but it is also a marker of our expansion into other sectors, allowing us to have a more positive and widespread impact on the lives of the local communities we are present in,” said Bboxx co-founder and chief executive Mansoor Hamayun.

More than 60% of Unilever’s retailer network are female entrepreneurs and the partnership will also provide them with a new source of income.

According to the announcement, this will be the first of many more partnerships between the parties in other markets.
