Danish renewable energy company Better Energy plans to postpone around 3 GW of solar projects from its Danish portfolio until after 2030 in view of the challenging market environment and negative electricity prices.

The company announced its decision on Wednesday, saying it reflects the slowed-down demand for renewable energy. “We still firmly believe in the necessity and urgency of a full-scale transition to green energy, but it is fundamental that the production of green energy follows the demand," commented CEO Rasmus Lildholdt Kjaer.

Better Energy pointed out the negative electricity prices across Europe and the record-low preliminary levels this year in Denmark, in particular. "We react swiftly to market signals to ensure that we are in the right position and aligned towards the market situation we are heading into,” it said to explain the changed timing for its project development portfolio and the general need for flexible decisions.

In addition to its home country, Better Energy operates in Poland, Sweden and Finland. Last year, it expanded its activities, doubling its renewable energy generation to 941 GWh and nearly tripling its construction portfolio compared to 2022.
