Renewable energy platform BHE Montana, a portfolio company of Berkshire Hathaway Energy, announced the start of construction works on a 75-MW battery energy storage system (BESS) in Cut Bank, Montana.

The Glacier Battery System is a standalone two-hour BESS that will support real-time scheduling of intermittent, renewable generation from BHE Montana’s wind and solar generation assets. The site will be interconnected to the Montana-Alberta Tie Line.

The facility is scheduled to become operational by the end of 2025, BHE Montana said in a statement on Thursday.

In its home state, the company operates the 189-MW Rim Rock wind farm near Kevin, as well as the 105-MW Glacier I and 103.5-MW Glacier II wind farms that span southeast Glacier County and southwest Toole. It announced it intends to develop the Glacier Battery System in June, along with a plan for a new 100-MW solar power facility dubbed the Glacier Solar Park.

The new solar plant will span 1,000 acres of land in north-central Montana. The facility, which will also be interconnected to the Montana-Alberta Tie Line, is expected to be in operation by the end of 2026.
