Biodiesel adds USD 6bn to Brazil GDP since 2008

Sep 26, 2012 - Biodiesel production has added more than BRL 12 billion (USD 5.909bn/EUR 4.589bn) to the country's gross domestic product (GDP) since 2008, according to a study released by the Fipe/USP economic research agency.
The study, elaborated at request by the Brazilian Association of Biodiesel Producers (Aprobio), also showed that the biodiesel sector has created 86,112 jobs in Brazil since 2008.
Moreover, local biodiesel production has resulted in savings of BRL 11.5 billion from mineral diesel imports and has contributed significantly to an increase of local soybean production, Fipe/USP estimated.
At the same time, carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions were reduced by 11.8 million tonnes, according to Aprobio.
The mandatory percentage of biodiesel blend to conventional diesel is currently 5%. Aprobio is lobbying for the blend's lift to 7% in the short term claiming that there already is sufficient spare capacity for the said hike to be implemented.
