Black & Veatch has been awarded a design and consultancy services contract for Green Earth Power’s 220-MW solar project in Myanmar, work on which is to finally start early next year.

Construction is to kick off in the first quarter of 2016, Black & Veatch said today, without disclosing the value of the contract it has won.

The power plant will be located in Minbu, Magway region. Green Earth Power, the project developer, sealed a memorandum of agreement (MOA) with the Myanmar government a year ago. At the time it had already completed all needed preliminary works and obtained land.

The 220-MW Minbu solar project comes to support Myanmar’s goal of boosting its power generation capacity to 30 GW in 2030 from just 2.5 GW at present. Currently, over 75% of the population has no access to electricity.

“Black & Veatch expects many Asian countries to lead the next wave of renewable energy growth,” the firm said.
