US consumer and professional products maker The Clorox Company (NYSE:CLX) has sealed a virtual power purchase agreement (VPPA) for electricity coming from 47 MW of wind turbines owned by Enel Green Power North America.

The 12-year contract concerns some of the output of Enel’s 250-MW 25 Mile Creek wind farm, which is currently being built in Oklahoma. The power plant is due to be commissioned at the end of this year, with deliveries to Clorox set to begin on January 1, 2023.

The contracted electricity volume will cover about 50% of the power requirements of Clorox’s operations in the US and Canada, which have been running solely on renewable power since the start of 2021.

Clorox, which markets bleach and cleaning products, home care products, wraps and containers, dressings and sauces, as well as digestive health products, already has a 70-MW solar VPPA with Enel that secures about 50% of its power demand in the US and Canada. The company switched to 100% renewable energy when it started buying renewable energy credits (RECs) on the open market for the rest.

The second VPPA with Enel will no longer require the purchase of RECs, Clorox noted. The US firm aims to become net zero by 2050.
