Bleach maker Clorox to buy solar power from Enel

US consumer and professional products maker The Clorox Company (NYSE:CLX) has sealed a virtual power purchase agreement (VPPA) with Enel Green Power North America for 70 MW of renewable energy.

The contract has a term of 12 years and will become effective in 2021. Under its terms, Clorox will buy power from a portion of the 245-MW direct current (DC) second phase of Enel’s 497-MW DC Roadrunner solar project in Texas.

The 252-MW DC first phase of that project is currently being built and is scheduled for completion by the end of the year. In turn, the project phase that is the subject of the VPPA will be constructed by the end of 2020. Once up and running, the solar plant will be able to produce up to 1.2 TWh of electricity per year.

"We believe this agreement will significantly contribute toward Clorox achieving our goal of 100% renewable electricity in our operations in the US and Canada in 2021, four years earlier than originally planned,” said Benno Dorer, Clorox’s chairman and CEO.

Clorox markets bleach and cleaning products, home care products, wraps and containers, dressings and sauces, as well as digestive health products, among other types of products.
