BMR Energy buys 5-MW Cayman Islands solar farm

January 10 (Renewables Now) – BMR Energy, the Virgin Group unit that develops and operates clean energy projects in the Caribbean and Latin America, said Wednesday it has acquired a 5-MW solar plant in the Cayman Islands.

BMR Energy will take over all operations of the solar plant and the purchase power agreement (PPA) with Caribbean Utilities Company (CUC). The park was previously owned by Entropy Cayman Solar I.

Built on a rock quarry, the Bodden Town Solar Farm is the Cayman Islands’ only utility-scale solar project. With a total of 21,690 photovoltaic panels, it has been operating since July 2017, producing enough power to meet the demand of 800 households.

“Our team is looking forward to driving facility operations to boost efficiency to deliver as much clean energy as we can for the community and look forward to expanding our Cayman operations in the future,” said BMR Energy CEO Bruce Levy.

The Cayman Islands have a renewable power target of 70% by 2037.

BMR Energy expects increased activity during 2019 in the Caribbean and Central America as countries in the region begin to implement their renewable energy programmes.
