BMR to start building 34-MW wind farm in Jamaica by end-2014

Jun 26, 2014 - BMR Jamaica Wind Ltd intends to begin construction of a 34-MW wind farm in southern Jamaica by end-2014, the Jamaica Observer said on Wednesday.

The company, part of BMR Energy, on June 24 sealed a 20-year power purchase agreement with the Jamaica Public Service Company (JPS) for the output of the facility. Under the terms of the deal, the JPS also has the option to buy a 20% interest in the USD-90-million (EUR 66m) project.

The BMR Jamaica wind farm will consist of 11 turbines, which will be installed in the St Elizabeth parish. It is expected to be switched on in September 2015. According to BMR’s calculations, the output of the plant will cut oil imports by 250,000-300,000 barrels per year, which will reduce Jamaica's oil costs by USD 25 million annually.

The 34-MW wind park will be situated in proximity to JPS’ 3-MW wind plant at Munro.
