US aerospace giant Boeing (NYSE:BA) will cover a quarter of the electricity consumption at its Mesa site in Arizona with solar power from a new 100-MW plant as part of a deal with the Salt River Project (SRP) utility.

The contract has a term of 15 years and envisages Boeing buying electricity generated by SRP’s soon-to-be-built solar park in Eloy, Arizona. The facility will be constructed about 50 miles from the Mesa site, where Boeing manufactures Apache helicopters and houses various corporate, commercial and defense teams.

The new solar power plant is seen to start power generation in December 2021.

Boeing wants to cut its greenhouse gas emissions by 25% by 2025 and ultimately power its operations with 100% renewable energy. Two of the company’s sites already run on 100% renewables, namely Renton, Washington and Charleston, South Carolina.
