The US Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) is considering lease sales for new offshore wind capacities off the Western Pacific island of Guam and has scheduled a task force meeting to discuss the feasibility of such an initiative.

The event is aimed at facilitating coordination among federal, territorial and local governments on renewable energy activities on the Outer Continental Shelf off Guam’s coast. The task force will seek to coordinate offshore wind energy development planning and help in identifying the most suitable areas for potential offshore wind leasing.

The first BOEM Guam Intergovernmental Renewable Energy Task Force meeting is scheduled for September 11. It will be followed by a BOEM-led public question-and-answer session on topics identified on the meeting agenda, a press statement said on Thursday.

The Guam Power Authority has committed to providing 50% of the island’s electric power from renewable or non-greenhouse gas emission sources by 2030 and 100% by 2040 under its Clean Energy Master Plan (CEMP).

Earlier this year, the Biden-Harris administration unveiled plans for up to 12 potential offshore wind energy auctions across the Atlantic, Gulf of Mexico, Pacific, and the waters offshore the US territories through 2028.
