Bolivia commissions 50-MW solar plant

Bolivia has switched on a 50-MW photovoltaic (PV) plant in the western department of Oruro, the government said last week.

The Oruro PV farm represents an investment of more than USD 42.6 million (EUR 38.6m). It was built by Spanish company TSK Electronica y Electricidad SA and is owned by state-owned utility Empresa Nacional de Energia (ENDE), according a previous press release.

With this new addition to its grid, Bolivia now has 194 MW of renewable capacity, or enough to meet 13% of the national power demand, vice-president Alvaro Garcia Linera said.

During the inauguration event, Garcia Linera added that the government plans to double the solar farm's capacity in the upcoming years. Bolivia will also add wind and geothermal power capacity, aiming to achieve its goal of 502 MW of renewable capacity by 2023. The country wants to reach a 45% to 50% renewables share by 2025.
