Bolivia expects USD 250m loan from Japan for geothermal plant - report

(ADPnews) - Dec 10, 2010 - Bolivia expects to receive a loan of nearly USD 250 million (EUR 188.1m) from Japan for the construction of a 50 MW geothermal plant in the Laguna Colorada area in the southwestern Potosi department, Bolivian presidential spokesman Ivan Canelas told official news agency ABI.
The two governments agreed to cooperate on the geothermal project yesterday, during the visit of Bolivian president Evo Morales to Japan.
The plant may be expanded to 100 MW in the future, according to a joint declaration, signed by Morales and Japanese prime minister Naoto Kan.
The amount of the loan was not specified in the declaration.
Morales reminded that in 2006 Japan cancelled and forgave the debt of Bolivia of nearly USD 560 million.
After more than 10 years, Japan's extending of loans to Bolivia is being resumed, in this case for the installation of a geothermal plant in Laguna Colorada, in Potosi, Morales said.
