Bolivia's Plurinational Legislative Assembly said Thursday it has officially approved state-owned utility Empresa Nacional de Energia’s (ENDE) 50-MW photovoltaic (PV) project in the western department of Oruro.

The company’s unit Guaracachi SA is the entity in charge of the scheme. It will develop and construct the solar farm in Caracollo municipality, Cercado province.

The French Development Agency (AFD) has committed to support the PV project with some EUR 60 million (USD 67m) in total.

Upon its grid-connection, the solar power plant is expected to be able to generate approximately 106 GWh of electricity each year. It will not only help strengthen the region’s energy mix and reduce its carbon footprint, but also provide access to a certain technological know-how, which could be used in other Bolivian solar projects later on, according to the press statement.
