Bolivia seeks USD-25m loan from Japan for geothermal plant

May 9, 2014 - Bolivia's government has this week signed drafts for a loan of USD 25 million (EUR 18.1m) from Japan for the construction of a 50-MW geothermal plant in the Laguna Colorada area, southwestern Bolivia.

The 50-MW unit is considered as the first phase of the project. Bolivia plans four wells to evaluate the geothermal energy of the area that may generate 100 MW in the future, foreign affairs minister David Choquehuanca said.

The documents were signed on Monday by Choquehuanca and Japan's parliamentary vice-minister for foreign affairs, Hirotaka Ishihara.

The project could be financed through Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).
