Austrian speciality chemicals company Borealis AG has recently signed a contract to source wind and solar power from a hybrid renewable energy park in Nickelsdorf owned by subsidiaries of Burgenland Energie.

The two companies have signed a 10-year power purchase agreement (PPA) for about 70 GWh per year, which would be enough to meet 55% of the polyolefin producer’s local electricity consumption.

The contracted generation will be directed towards Borealis’ facilities in Schwechat. Power supply should begin in January 2026.

Borealis’ objective is to source 100% of the electricity for its Polyolefins and Base Chemicals business units from renewable sources by 2030. With the new PPA, the company expects to reduce its annual Scope 2 emissions by around 7,300 metric tonnes.
