Botswana now has different plan for 100-MW solar tender

Botswana Power Corporation (BPC) has dropped its search for a joint venture (JV) partner to develop, build and operate a 100-MW solar power plant in the country and it will now pursue a different course.

The state-owned utility of Botswana said on Saturday it has decided to proceed with a new tender, seeking to engage an independent power producer (IPP) to develop the project as a 100% private undertaking.

“The potential investor(s) would be required to establish partnerships with Botswana citizen companies for joint project ownership, development, implementation, operations and maintenance as would be specified in the ToR (terms of reference),” BPC said.

The tender is expected to start by the end of June. According to BPC’s statement, the winner will be in charge of the development, permitting, financing, design, engineering, procurement, construction, operation and maintenance of the photovoltaic (PV) park. The targeted capacity will be installed in two phases of 50 MW each.

The now-cancelled process for the selection of a JV partner for the 100-MW solar power project started in 2017.
