British oil and gas major BP Plc (LON:BP) announced on Thursday that its joint venture (JV) with Aberdeen City Council has received the approval of the local authority’s planning committee for the first phase of the Aberdeen Hydrogen Hub project.

The JV, called BP Aberdeen Hydrogen Energy Limited, or bpAHEL, sought clearance to build a green hydrogen production and vehicle refuelling facility, all powered by a dedicated solar farm installed on the former Ness landfill site.

The entire hub will be developed in three phases. Phase one of the project is designed with the capacity to produce more than 800 kg of green hydrogen per day, which is estimated to be enough fuel for 25 buses and a similar number of other fleet vehicles. First production is scheduled for 2025, subject to final investment decision.

“We’re aiming to stimulate demand for hydrogen by working with fleets in and around the city and, through the wider Aberdeen Hydrogen Hub programme, help the people and businesses of Aberdeen capture value through the energy transition,” said Oliver Taylor, chief executive of bpAHEL.

Future phases of the project could supply larger volumes of green hydrogen for rail, freight and marine. Supplying hydrogen for heat and export is also an option.
