The project is located near Duqm, Al Wusta governorate in central Oman, and targets the production of 150,000 tonnes of green hydrogen per year. In June 2023, BP signed a project development and land use agreement with state-owned company Hydrom which is overseeing the development of the hydrogen industry in the Sultanate.
Furthermore, BP has entered into pacts with public authority OPAZ to potentially secure land for the development of green hydrogen derivatives within the Special Economic Zone at Duqm (SEZAD) and logistics service provider Asyad to jointly investigate opportunities in Oman's hydrogen sector.
In addition, the group is partnering with the Oman Hydrogen Center to explore potential collaborations in education and skill enhancement initiatives in the area of renewable energy and hydrogen.
The project targeting hydrogen production is part of a series of six initiatives totalling about USD 20 billion (EUR 18.46bn) in investments for which Oman signed binding commercial term sheets as part of its strategy to become a major producer of green hydrogen in the region.
