US renewable natural gas (RNG) producer Archaea Energy, a BP plc (LON:BP) company, and GFL Environmental (NYSE:GFL) on Monday announced the opening of their RNG plant in Wisconsin.

The facility, owned by the companies’ joint venture Saturn Renewables LLC, started operations in August. It is located next to the Hickory Meadows landfill, which is owned and operated by a subsidiary of GFL Environmental.

The plant uses the proprietary Archaea Modular Design (AMD) to capture biogas from in the landfill and convert it to RNG, which can be used for replacing diesel in vehicles, generating power, providing heat, as well as in various industrial applications.

The facility is capable of processing up to 4,800 standard cubic feet of landfill gas per minute (scfm) into RNG.

“GFL is excited to see our second RNG facility come online as part of our investment in growth opportunities that support our sustainability commitments,” said GFL Environmental CEO Patrick Dovigi.
