US renewable natural gas (RNG) producer Archaea Energy, a BP plc (LON:BP) company, has commissioned its largest-ever modular RNG plant next to a landfill in Shawnee, Kansas, BP America said on Tuesday.

The plant utilises the company’s original Archaea Modular Design (AMD) and can convert 9,600 standard cubic feet of landfill gas per minute (scfm) into enough RNG to heat around 38,000 homes annually, according to the oil-and-gas major.

BP America’s press release highlighted the new and efficient nature of the AMD design, contrasting the traditional custom-built approach to construction of RNG plants. The AMD plants can be built on skids using interchangeable components, allowing for faster assembly.

The design also offers scalability with three sizes -- 3,200, 6,400, and 9,600 scfm.

Archaea commissioned its first AMD plant in Medora, Indiana, in October 2023. The Shawnee plant is three times larger than the one in Medora.

"This represents another significant milestone for Archaea. A plant of this size can have a positive impact in capturing emissions from a landfill and providing our customers with lower carbon fuel,” said Starlee Sykes, CEO of Archaea Energy.
