Brazil put into operation 621.56 MW of new renewable power plants in January 2024, including wind, solar, and hydropower capacities, power sector regulator Aneel announced on Monday.

Wind power had the biggest contribution with 422.20 MW added last month, while solar power accounted for 198.12 MW of new additions. Additionally, small-scale hydropower plants supplied 1.24 MW to the total.

Aneel projects that Brazil will install a little over 10.1 GW of new power generation capacity during 2024. If achieved, this will be the second largest annual expansion recorded since 1997, following the around 10.3 GW added last year.

At the end of last month, Brazil had 198,979.8 MW of power generation capacity in operation, of which 84.17% comes from renewable energy.
